So, you think you want to be a staffer? There are a few things you need to know first:
Staffing isn't easy. You must use the skills you learned during course and put them into practice, teaching others along the way. Don't let this turn you off - if you want to staff, do it! If you're not sure, come to orientation and see what you think.
Staffing is not free. For logistical reasons, we have to impose a fee (this pays for things like staff shirts, food, etc.). Even if you're not sure whether you would like to budget for this, please come to orientation if you're interested! After orientation, you'll have a better understanding of what staffing looks like and whether the experience will be worth the price tag.
Staffing NYLT is a commitment. It's a big course with a lot of material and preparation. Staff orientation occurs in January, and we hold overnights to go over this material at least once per month between then and course, plus other occasional events. You will spend time preparing materials of your own at home.
Staffing is fun. We enjoy what we do; that's why so many staffers return every year. You will learn more about teams; you will have more first-hand experience as a leader; and you will be able to apply skills you learn both inside and outside of Scouting. Plus, we do enjoy a few shenanigans... :)
A presentation is given to our 2022 course staff. COVID mask throwback!
March of 2025 was a little chilly for a campfire rehearsal, but we still had fun!
I have participated in an NYLT course, but did not staff the next year. Am I still eligible to staff?
Yes! It's okay if you couldn't staff immediately following your participant year.
I have participated and/or staffed in an NYLT course in another council. Can I staff for TFC?
Yes! As long as you've been a participant or staff member in some NYLT course, you can staff in Three Fires Council.
What if I don't remember some of the material we learned?
Our staff reviews all material during staff development weekends that happen before course every year. We'll catch you up.
Please direct any questions (or other inquiries listed below) to tfcnylt@gmail.com.
Youth staff are the face of NYLT. They teach and facilitate the majority of the course.
REQUIREMENTS:
Attend the Staff Orientation date listed on the back of your staff application, and turn the application in at that time.
If you participated in a Three Fires Council NYLT course, you will have received a paper staff application at its conclusion.
If you took NYLT in another council, have lost your staff application (or have one that is out of date), or cannot attend Staff Orientation, email us.
You must graduate NYLT as a participant prior to joining staff.
You must be currently registered in a Scouting America troop, crew, or ship.
You must fall within the participant age limits of your respective program.
If you see a cow wandering around camp, let West Troop's Scoutmaster know. (2024)
Scouting America has different types of adult registrations. The relevant ones here are "adult program participants" and "adult leaders".
Adult program participants are permitted to partake in many of the same Scouting activities as youths; however, all Safeguarding Youth principles relevant to adults (anyone aged 18 or older) will apply to them.
For the purposes of our program, "youth staff" permits youth participants and adult program participants, while "adult staff" permits adult leaders.
For example, a member of a troop must be a youth participant (under 18) to join youth staff, but a member of a Venturing crew could still partake in youth staff at 19 (as an adult program participant).
If you are part of multiple programs, the program with the highest youth age limit applies.
For example, if you are simultaneously an assistant Scoutmaster in a troop and a participant of a Venturing crew, then you can choose whether you would like a youth staff or adult staff position.
You must be considered a registered adult in Scouting America irrespective of which type of staff you would like to be part of.
You must hold a valid Safeguarding Youth Training certificate prior to staff development weekends. This training is available for free through the "My Training" section at my.scouting.org.
Our 2025 Scoutmasters and one of their assistants plotting shenanigans.
NYLT is a youth-led course, but it is also adult-run. In other words, the youth staff runs the show while adults guide them and handle logistics. Behind the scenes, adults budget, plan and prepare meals, do administrative tasks, etc. This allows the youth staff to focus on their job, which is teaching the participants (and developing their own leadership skills).
To sum that up: WE NEED ADULTS TOO!!!
For safety reasons, we require for you to be a registered adult in Scouting America. You must also complete Safeguarding Youth Training, and your completion certificate needs to be up-to-date before staff development weekends.
